Responding to Stressors

Updated: May 28, 2020

I met with an executive coaching client last week who explained that he was dealing with a tremendous amount of pressure at work and in his personal life. Despite his best efforts to keep each ball in the air, he felt like he was failing in the office and at home.

I always remind clients that I’m not a therapist; I’m a business coach with a foundation in human resources and organizational effectiveness. While I was happy to listen to the specifics of the challenges that he was facing, I suggested that perhaps it would be more beneficial to talk about a model that might help him respond to stressful situations. He agreed.

I was first introduced to the “4 A’s of Stress Management” many years ago through Corporate Executive Board (CEB), now Gartner. I believed it was developed specifically as a workplace wellness model. I’ve since come to learn it is a well-known model that is discussed at the Mayo Clinic, the American Psychological Association and many other organizations for personal and professional related stress.

And it works! So now I’m sharing it with you. List out the situations that are creating stress and determine which response will work best.
